Fast Moving

December 31, 2007

No season goes by quicker than the NFL season.  Wasn’t it just Labor Day?  Columbus Day?  After 17 weeks, we are down to 12 teams in the NFL Championship Tournament.  The chalk tells us that New England will play Dallas for the NFL title, but here are my two live wires for the upcoming playoffs.

In the AFC, the Jacksonville Jaguars are poised for a run because they are physical and they can run the ball.  A lot of people like Seattle in the NFC and they are certainly talented enough to win the NFC Championship, but their inconsistency scares me.  So, for that reason, I’ll take the New York Giants as my NFC live wire.

Too Much on Winning

December 30, 2007

Last night Bryant Gumbel asked Cris Collinsworth, “if the Pats go 16-0 and don’t win the Super Bowl, can they take pride in what they accomplished?”  To no one’s surprise, Collinsworth said, “no, that they must win it all.”  Gumbel then said “really?”  We live in a win-it-all or you’re nothing society and to me, that’s sad.  If the Pats lose, they will be called chokers or some other sports talk term, but they did accomplish something that no other NFL team did:  they went 16-0.

Rice Belongs in Hall

December 30, 2007

When the BWAA turns in their ballots for the Hall of Fame in early January, Jim Rice should be on the required 75 percent for enshrinement.  He was baseball’s most feared slugger from 1975-1986, and in my opinion had six HOF seasons:  1977. 1978, 1979, 1983, 1984, and 1986.  In today’s Sterioid Era, his accomplishments look better and better.
